Shy in Front of the Camera? How to Feel Natural in Your Wedding Photos

One of the most common things couples tell us before their wedding is: "We're not very photogenic." Here's what we always say back: almost no one is naturally comfortable being photographed. It's a skill, not a personality trait — and with the right approach, feeling natural in your wedding photos is something anyone can achieve. Here's how.

Do an Engagement Shoot First

The single most effective thing you can do is book an engagement session before your wedding. It's a low-stakes, relaxed shoot where the only goal is getting comfortable. You learn how your photographer works, what direction they give, and how the two of you look and move on camera — all without the pressure of the big day. By the time the wedding arrives, the camera is a familiar presence, not a threatening one.

Choose a Photographer Whose Personality You Like

You'll spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than almost anyone else. If you feel at ease with them as a person, it shows up in the photos. Book a video call before you commit, and pay attention to how the conversation feels. Warmth and good communication translate directly to relaxed, natural images.

Give Yourself Something to Do, Not Just Somewhere to Stand

Posed photos feel stiff because they are stiff. Good photographers give you actions, not positions — walk towards me, whisper something in their ear, look out at the view. When you're doing something, you stop thinking about the camera. That's when the real images happen.

Stop Trying to Look a Certain Way

The couples who look most beautiful in photos are usually the ones who stopped trying to look beautiful and just focused on each other. Laugh at the awkward directions. Hold their hand properly, not for the camera. Say something true. The camera catches truth far better than performance.

What to Do in the Week Before

A few practical things that make a real difference:

  • Wear your shoes around the house for a few days so you're not dealing with blisters and discomfort during portraits.

  • Get a good night's sleep the night before — tired eyes are one of the hardest things to correct in editing.

  • Eat properly on the day. Low blood sugar makes everything harder, including looking relaxed.

  • Trust your team. If you've booked well, they know how to bring out the best in you. Let them.
