How to Prepare for Your Wedding Videographer (Tips From Behind the Lens)
Booking a wedding videographer is one thing — giving them the best possible conditions to do their job is another. The couples who walk away with the most beautiful films aren't always the ones with the biggest budgets or the most elaborate venues. They're the ones who prepared. Here's everything we wish every couple knew before the day.
Share Your Timeline Early — and Build in Buffer
Your videographer needs to know the shape of your day before they arrive. Send through a detailed run sheet at least two weeks out: getting ready location, ceremony start, reception formalities, first dance. The more specific, the better.
And please — build in buffer time. Running fifteen minutes behind during getting-ready creates a ripple effect that can mean rushing the vows or losing golden-hour portraits entirely. A relaxed day always looks better on film.
Talk to Your Celebrant About Audio
The single most common source of disappointment in a wedding film isn't the visuals — it's muffled or inaudible audio during the ceremony. Before your day, ask your celebrant if they're comfortable wearing a small lapel mic. Most are. If they're not, let your videographer know in advance so they can set up a backup recorder close to the action.
The same goes for speeches. Let the MC and your videographer connect briefly at the reception so microphone handovers are smooth and every word is captured clearly.
Write Your Vows Down
Even if you plan to speak from the heart, having your vows written is a safety net — and it helps the videographer anticipate pacing and position themselves correctly. Winging the vows is beautiful; winging the vows while your videographer scrambles to reframe is less ideal.
Tell Us What Matters Most to You
Every couple has a moment they most want captured — a grandparent's reaction, a sibling's speech, a meaningful first dance song. Tell your videographer. We can't be everywhere at once, but with a short list of priorities, we'll make sure the moments that matter to you are never missed.
Let Us Tell Your Story — Not Perform for the Camera
The best wedding films are documentary, not theatrical. Forget the camera is there. Talk to each other, not at us. The laughter, the whispered words, the hand squeezes — that's the film. The more naturally you move through your day, the more powerful the final edit will be.
