What Is an Engagement Shoot and Do You Really Need One?

An engagement shoot is one of those things couples either book without hesitation or quietly wonder whether they actually need. It's not a compulsory part of getting married. But for most couples who do one, it turns out to be one of the most useful — and unexpectedly enjoyable — parts of the whole process. Here's what it actually is, what happens during one, and how to decide if it's right for you.

What Is an Engagement Shoot?

An engagement shoot is a dedicated photo session — usually one to two hours — with your photographer before the wedding. It can happen anywhere: a location that's meaningful to you, a neighbourhood you love, a vineyard, the beach, a city laneway, or simply somewhere with beautiful light. There's no ceremony, no schedule, and no pressure. It's just the two of you and your photographer, getting to know each other through the lens.

What Happens During One?

Your photographer will guide you through the session — suggesting movement, giving direction where it helps, and mostly just letting you be together while they capture what happens naturally. Most couples feel awkward for the first ten minutes and completely relaxed by the end. That shift — from stiff to natural — is exactly the point.

The session typically produces a set of images you can use for save-the-dates, social media, or simply to have as a couple portrait before the wedding. But the most valuable thing it produces isn't a photo. It's familiarity.

The Real Reason to Do an Engagement Shoot

By the time your wedding day arrives, most couples have met their photographer two or three times: at the initial meeting, perhaps a planning call, and the day itself. That's not a lot of time to build the kind of comfort that produces great photos.

An engagement session changes that. After an hour or two shooting together, your photographer knows your angles, your dynamic, how you respond to direction, and what makes you both genuinely laugh. And you know how they work — so on the wedding day, the camera feels familiar rather than intimidating. That ease shows up directly in your photos.

Do You Actually Need One?

If you're comfortable in front of a camera and have worked with your photographer before, you can get beautiful results without one. But for most couples — particularly those who feel self-conscious being photographed — an engagement session is the single most effective way to improve the quality of your wedding photos before the day even begins.

It's also worth considering: an engagement shoot is a relatively low-stakes environment to discover whether your photographer's style and energy genuinely suits you. Better to find out then than on the morning of your wedding.

Is It Included in Your Package?

This varies between photographers — some include it, some charge extra, some don't offer it at all. At Honey Weddings, an engagement shoot is included in our $4,500 Full Day Photo + Video Package as standard. We do this deliberately: we've seen how much difference it makes to the wedding day gallery, and we want every couple to arrive on the day feeling ready.
