The wait for your wedding gallery is one of the most anticipation-filled periods of the whole wedding experience. And when the notification finally arrives — your photos are ready — it can be both thrilling and a little overwhelming. Here's exactly what to expect when your gallery lands, and how to approach it so the experience matches the moment.
When Will Your Gallery Arrive?
Delivery timelines vary between photographers, but industry standard for a professionally edited wedding gallery is six to ten weeks for photos and eight to twelve weeks for a wedding film. Some photographers deliver faster; few deliver high-quality work in less than four weeks without cutting corners on the edit.
If your photographer gave you a specific delivery window at booking, hold them to it — and if you're approaching that window without an update, it's perfectly reasonable to follow up. You should have received a timeline in writing as part of your contract.
How the Gallery Is Usually Delivered
Most professional photographers deliver via an online gallery platform — services like Pixieset, Shootproof, or similar. You'll receive a link, usually by email, with a password if the gallery is private. From there you can browse, download, and share your images directly.
Before you do anything else: check that the download link works and that you can access all of the images. Then follow the three-step backup process immediately — download everything, save to an external drive, and back up to cloud storage. Don't leave your gallery sitting in a link that may expire.
How to View Your Gallery for the First Time
This one is worth being intentional about. Don't open your gallery for the first time on your phone between meetings. Give yourself a proper moment — a quiet evening, a large screen, and your partner beside you if possible. Your wedding photos deserve more than a quick scroll.
On your first viewing, resist the urge to immediately jump to favourites or start sharing. Go through the full gallery once, in order, letting the story of the day unfold. The images are sequenced deliberately — the narrative matters.
What If You Don't Love Every Photo?
A professional photographer will deliver a curated selection — not every frame they captured, but the best ones from the day. That means you may not see every single moment you remember, and there will almost certainly be images that feel more meaningful to you than others. That's normal.
If there's something specific you were expecting that genuinely isn't there — a particular family grouping, a moment you know was captured — reach out to your photographer calmly and specifically. Most photographers are happy to check their culled files for images that didn't make the final edit.
What to Do After Your First Viewing
Download the full gallery — don't rely on the delivery link as your only copy
Back up immediately — external drive plus cloud storage, minimum
Share thoughtfully — consider reaching out to family with their photos before posting publicly
Start thinking about your album — if an album is part of your package, your photographer will likely be in touch about the design process
The Film Arrives Separately
If your package includes a wedding film, it typically arrives a few weeks after the photo gallery — the editing process is longer and more involved. When it does arrive, the same advice applies: give it a proper first viewing, somewhere quiet, with your partner. The first time you hear your vows played back is not something you want to experience on a phone speaker in a car park.
